Cat lifespans

esperanza vida gatos

On being cat lovers and having at least one cat in your home, you are surely how long cats live. Well, just like you humans, each cat is a world unto itself, so you’ll never be able to know how long your cat is going to live beforehand. The only thing I have clear in my mind is that with the improvements in diet, immunizations and regular check-ups with the veterinarian, we cats are living progressively longer.

The average lifespan of any cat is 12-15 years, but it’s becoming progressively more usual to come across some of my siblings that have been around for many more years. In fact, my fellow feline from Texas, Creme Puff reached the ripe old age of 38 before leaving us according to the Guinness World Records. Wow! Just imagine!

Just like dogs, we cats age much faster than you humans. Our first year of life is equivalent to 15 years of yours, two years in a cat’s life being 24 years in a human’s life, and as of our second birthday, every year thereafter is the same as 4 years for you. I mean, any kitty cat you have that is only 8 years old is like you being 48 years old.

The really important thing in order for us to spend many years together with you is for you to provide us with a good quality of life and for you to have us neutered. It has been proven that all neutered cats avoid having future diseases related to testicles, uterus, ovaries and breast cancer, besides drastically curbing our urge to get into fights and going out of our minds when in heat, which is also something to be appreciated.

It’s crucial for you to pay a lot of attention to use in order to detect anything unusual in our behaviour. We cats usually hide things really well, and if you’re not paying attention, we’ll hide our illnesses as long as we can. If you see us starting to drinking more, eating less, shedding, bumps or lumps showing up on our skin, stopping using the litterbox or grooming ourselves, take us to see the veterinarian as soon as possible for a diagnosis of our problem.

Don’t skip any immunization or deworming visits and take us for our yearly veterinary check-up if you want us to live a long life. Don’t let us eat just any old thing. Take good care of our diet and provide us with the dry cat food best-suited to our needs and age.

To live a longer, healthier life, it’s also important for us not to be overweight, so between the quality dry cat good and the exercise you give us while you’re playing with us, you’ll  be able to keep us fit and active so that we’ll live a completely full life.
